Follow your own path
Hello friends,
Happy new year! I hope you could celebrate the start of 2023 well and are all sobered up again ;)
Many people feel the need to set themselves a New Year's resolution, for example to finally hit the gym or to spend less money, just to then quit their new set resolution 2 weeks later. Please don't be one of those people.
Today we are talking about goals once again. I just recently realized, that there are so many people out there who think the only way to become more satisfied in life is to acquire as many things as possible: A big car, clothes from a specific brand or a bigger house.
I argue that those things alone will not make your life better.
Let me challenge your beliefs in today's blog post.
Copy-Pasted goals
When you ask different people about what their biggest dreams in life are, you will most of the time get a reply like: "I want to have loads of money and retire early. I want to own a sports car and a villa and have a beautiful wife".
Is there something wrong with this goal itself?
The goal itself is a motivating one, but the problem is that not everyone has the right intentions behind this goal. Let me elaborate: Most people chase this dream based on their ego, just because it sounds good and gives you status. But what your ego wants is a dangerous misconception. People think: "I just need a Ferrari, and I'll be happy. I just need to get a beautiful wife, and I'll be happy. I just need to have two villas in Bali, and I'll be happy."
But will this all truly make you happy?
It's a complicated matter. If you have a Ferrari and no money left, have to work a job you hate, and you let your frustration out on the people around you, I'd say you have a perfect ego-based life: You can impress all your friends and are looked as a high status man in society, but you are unhappy.
On the other side, if you have a lot of financial freedom and know how to handle money, use it for travelling, helping other's and working on projects you love, I think you will live a fulfilled and happy life.
That's why it's dangerous to just chase what everybody around you is chasing.
If you only look at the people around you and just blindly copy what they are doing, you will never follow your own dreams, but some status symbol that nobody cares about. You won't be satisfied with the result and the path towards it.
Your true intentions
First, I want to make clear that you shouldn't just throw all of your goals out of your window without looking at them, but that you should really reflect on why you want to achieve the goals you have and then act on those.
Always ask yourself: What is the goal behind your goal?
For example: Let's say you regularly hit the gym. Why are you going?
Is it for:
- Impressing friends?
- Getting Girls?
- Looking good on those Instagram pictures?
Or is it:
- To live a healthy lifestyle?
- To become the best version of your self?
- Because you enjoy the process/training itself?
Your goal stays the same (gaining muscles or losing weight), but the motivation behind it is different. It's okay to motivate yourself with some ego-based motivation sometimes, but your main motivation should be coming from inspiration.
The best thing you can do for yourself is ask: If I had all the followers, all the status, the best woman/men, all the money and everything materialistic I could ever dream of in the world, what would I do?
With that, you take the ego away, because he already has everything he can have. You now will come up with goals that come from inspiration.
These are the goals worth chasing. Because if you just say "my new goal is to chill", you'd get bored within two days.
Would you teach something? Would you start producing music? Create art? Learn how to cook? Start a YouTube channel?
You can go very deeply into that.
And then make a commitment to yourself. Try out some new things and see where it leads to.
I want you to chase your dreams, no matter what other people think about it. And it's okay to feel lost in the beginning, especially when you try to explore what you like and have no clue where to start. But it's worth the time and hustle to find out what you want in life. Else, you will chase something that can never fulfil you.
Our generation doesn't have a defined purpose any more. We have to define it ourselves.
If you don't set goals for yourself that are worth chasing, your life will be boring as hell.
My challenge for you
I want you to take a piece of paper and do some self reflection. Write about goals you have in the four main areas in life (Health, Wealth, Relationships, Spirituality/Happiness) and just reflect on them. List at least 3 goals per area. Then ask yourself for each goal: "What is the goal behind the goal?". In other words: Why are you chasing this goal? What are you trying to achieve by reaching that goal?
Some examples for you
Inspirational ones are: Better health situation, deeper connections with the people around you, financial freedom (in the right way as discussed above).
Ego based intentions are: Impressing the people around you or having more than your neighbour/friends.
This will help you identify the goals you should be chasing.
